10 Questions to ask your Newborn Photographer
As a new parent, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right newborn photographer for your baby’s first pictures. San Diego is home to many talented photographers, but how do you know which one is right for you? To help you make an informed decision, here are 10 questions you should be asking your newborn photographer:
What is your experience with newborn photography?
When looking for a newborn photographer for your San Diego newborn pictures, it’s important to find a photographer who has experience working with newborns. Newborn photography requires a specific set of skills and knowledge, including how to handle and pose the baby safely. Newborn pictures are done within the first 3 weeks of life which means your baby’s bones and limbs are still not strong enough to support their body. Images you see online are most often composites, meaning multiple images are combined to make one beautiful picture.
Can I see samples of your work with newborns?
Samples of the photographer’s previous work with newborns can give you a better idea of their style and expertise. If you have a specific style in mind, be sure to ask if the photographer can accommodate your preferences. Most photographers have a style they’ve developed over the years and like to stick to that style. That’s why it’s important to find a photographer that matches the style that speaks to you.
Do you have a studio or do you shoot on location?
Deciding between a studio or location shoot is another important factor to consider. A studio provides a controlled environment while shooting on location can offer a more natural setting. Some photographers offer posed studio newborn pictures only. While others offer lifestyle newborn photography done in clients’ homes.
What is your photography style?
The photographer’s style is also a crucial consideration. Do you prefer posed pictures or candid shots? Make sure the photographer’s style aligns with your vision.

How long will the session last?
Knowing how long the session will last can help you plan accordingly. It also helps to know how long the session is if you’re bringing an older sibling. Most of my newborn sessions last between 2-4 hours. This means most of the time siblings only come for the beginning or the end of the session.
What should I bring to the session?
When it comes to props and outfits, some photographers provide them, while others may require you to bring your own. Be sure to ask what is included in the session and what you should bring. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes if you’re doing parent pictures as the studio gets hot and you may sweat. Or your baby might decide to have. a blowout on you – it does happen.
Do you provide props and outfits?
Here at Studio Freyja, I provide all of the props and outfits for your sessions. However, I always encourage parents to bring their own props if they have sentimental value. It’s a good idea to send an image of it to your photographer beforehand so they can plan accordingly.
How soon after the session will I receive the pictures?
After the session, you’ll want to know how soon you can expect to receive your pictures. Within a week of your session, I send out an email with a link to schedule your Reveal and Ordering Appointment via Zoom. This is when you get to select the images you want to keep from your session.
Can I order prints or albums from you?
Additionally, if you’re interested in ordering prints or albums, ask if the photographer provides those services. It’s always a good idea to purchase these products straight from your photographer for a few reasons. One, they can help you design your album so you don’t have to worry about it. Trust me, there won’t be time to do it yourself once the baby is here. Two, their computers are calibrated to their lab’s printer to ensure your pictures come out looking the very best.
What is your pricing and package options?
Finally, be sure to inquire about pricing and package options. Knowing the photographer’s rates and what is included in each package can help you budget accordingly. In San Diego you can expect to pay between $1000-$5000 for a newborn photographer depending on what products you like to add on.
