Tips to Choosing the Perfect Maternity Photo Outfit
Here’s a guide to help you choose the perfect dress for your maternity shoot.
What Kind of Dress Should You Wear to a Maternity Shoot?
Flowy and Fabulous
Flowy dresses are a popular choice for maternity photoshoots. They add a touch of elegance and movement to your photos. Look for dresses with soft fabrics that drape beautifully over your bump. Maxi dresses, wrap dresses, and empire-waist gowns are all excellent options. These are very flattering for every type of body. And especially neat when you’re not feeling comfortable in a body that’s very foreign to your regular body.
Crop Tops / Sports Bra
A really fun alternative to a dress is wearing a Crop Top or a Sports Bra and combine it with jeans or boyshorts. This is a great way to highlight your baby bump and creating intimate, yet tasteful maternity photos.
Bodysuites
Bodysuites are popular because they work for every bodytype, style and age. Bodysuites can be simple and formfitting. They can add drama and flair with fun little details in the sleeves or arms. And you can combine them with pants for a couple of different looks.
When Should I Buy a Maternity Photoshoot Dress?
Timing Your Purchase
It’s a good idea to start shopping for your maternity photoshoot dress around your second trimester. This gives you plenty of time to find the perfect outfit and make any necessary alterations. It also gives you the option to wear your dress for any baby showers you may have coming up. We always want to maxmize the use of our purchases.
Don’t buy – Rent or Borrow
You don’t always have to buy a dress either. Sometimes it can feel hard spending money on something you’ll only wear once. Instead, there are multiple options for renting or borrowing dresses.
A couple of great places for renting is RentTheRunway and MamaBumpRentals.
Or another great alternative is to borrow from your photographer. When you hire me for your maternity photography you get access to my carefully curated client closet filled with beautiful dresses, drapes, bodysuites and croptops.
