Planning Your Maternity Session: Everything You Need to Know for the Best Maternity Photos

Planning a maternity photoshoot can seem overwhelming, but with a little preparation, it can be a breeze. I’ve been a maternity photographer for over a decade and have gathered some great tips and tricks.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan the perfect maternity photos in San Diego.

Is Sunrise or Sunset Better for the Perfect Maternity Photos?

What Time is best to take Maternity Photos?

Golden Hour

Both sunrise and sunset provide beautiful lighting for your maternity photos, often referred to as the “golden hour.” This time offers soft, warm light that’s incredibly flattering. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, choose the time that suits your energy levels best. Trust me, chasing after that perfect light is worth it!

Generally you can expect a “Golden Hour” shoot to start about 1 hour prior to sunrise and about one to 1.5 hours before sunset. If kids are included in the shoot take that into account for bedtime and naptime. And don’t forget to check daylight savings time when scheduling your shoot!

Blue Hour

You might also hear some photographers mention the “Blue Hour”. This is the special moment just before sunrise or right after sunset when the sun dips below the horizon. This short period of time is when a soft blue light fills the sky. It creates a cool, peaceful setting that is every bit as beautiful as golden hour. And when timing it perfectly, you get a maternity gallery with multiple different light moods.

What Is the Best Color to Wear for Maternity Pictures?

Choosing the Right Palette

When choosing colors for your maternity photos, think of colors that you look good in and feel comfortable in.

Soft pastels, neutrals, and earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully. These colors complement that natural glow and create timeless images. However, with the right complimentary clothes, skintone and location settings, bright colors can be equally as beautiful. The perfect maternity photos are those that reflect you and your personality. So if that’s soft and neutral, or bright and colorful, is totally up to you!

How to Pose for Maternity Photos?

Trust your Photographer

Posing can feel a bit awkward, but sometimes awkward can create the best poses! The key is to stay relaxed and comfortable, and to trust your photographer. Gentle touches to your belly, looking down lovingly, or a simple side profile can create beautiful, natural shots. During your maternity photoshoot, I’ll guide you through every pose, ensuring you look your very best.

Using the Best Angles for Maternity Photos?

Angles can make a huge difference. A side or three-quarter profile often highlights your bump beautifully. Sometimes I experiment with angles. Shooting from down low can create more of an editorial look. Shooting from above can minimize curves. Trust my expertise – I know how to find your best angles for the best maternity photos.
