The session

You’re only pregnant with this baby once

The days feel long, but the weeks go fast, and once your baby arrives there’s rarely time to stop and remember what this felt like. Plenty of maternity photos are about the bump. Mine are about you: the woman who is about to meet someone she already loves. A maternity session at Studio Freyja is a guided studio session in downtown Anoka, MN, with every pose directed, so you can stop worrying about looking awkward and simply be in it. Partners and older children are welcome for a few frames.

28–32

Weeks

The sweet spot: 28 to 32 weeks

Between 28 and 32 weeks, your bump is round and clearly visible, and you’re usually still comfortable standing, turning and sitting on the floor. Wait much longer and tired feet, swelling and an early arrival all start to get a vote. To land in that window, book early in your second trimester.

Year-round

Minnesota winter? The studio stays warm

Because sessions happen in the Anoka studio, January is as good a month as June. A large faux window gives soft backlight, so the light looks the same whatever the weather is doing outside.

Studio or outdoors?

Studio vs. outdoor maternity photos in Minnesota

Both can be beautiful. Here’s how to decide which suits you and your due date.

Light you can count on

In the studio, soft window light flatters your skin and your bump, whatever the weather. Outdoors, the light depends on the hour and the season.

Comfort in the third trimester

A warm studio, a private changing room and a place to sit between looks make a real difference when you’re 30 weeks along.

Fabric that moves

Flowing gowns and soft fabric photograph beautifully in the studio, where we control the light and the space, with no wind to fight.

When outdoors makes sense

If your 28 to 32 weeks land in late spring, summer or early fall, an outdoor session can be lovely. We decide together at your consultation.

Wardrobe

Three to five looks, no shopping required

Plan on three to five looks: something fitted that shows your bump, something flowing, and something that feels like everyday you. At your consultation we review it all and plan the session around it.

I truly felt like a goddess. You have an amazing way of helping a woman feel special and beautiful even when they’re feeling a little foreign in their body.

The name

Why name a studio after a goddess of fertility?

Freyja is the Norse goddess of love, beauty and fertility. I was born and raised in Sweden, and when I opened my studio I wanted to carry that heritage with me. It feels right that the women who walk through these doors, especially the ones expecting, do it under her name.

Questions

A few more questions

When should I book my maternity session?

Book early in your second trimester so we can find a date in the 28 to 32 week window. If you’re past that, reach out anyway and we’ll find a time that works.

I’m nervous in front of the camera. Is that okay?

Almost everyone is. I guide every pose, from your hands to the tilt of your chin, and we take it slowly. By the second look, the hardest part is usually behind you.

Do you edit the photos?

Yes. Every image you choose is retouched by hand for skin, light and color. You still look like you, on a very good day.

Can my partner or kids be in the photos?

Yes. A few frames with your partner or your children are welcome. Tell me when you book so we plan the time.

Do you photograph newborns too?

No. I focus on maternity, motherhood and empowerment portraits, so every session is about you. You’re welcome back for a motherhood session once your baby is here.

Is hair and makeup included?

Not right now. Come camera-ready, and use the studio vanity for touch-ups between looks.
